Dance Nation
by Theatre en Bloc

Aug. 29 - Sep. 15, 2019
Thursdays-Sundays

“Maybe this is the year, this is the moment, this is the dance where your lives will start!”

Somewhere in America, an army of pre-teen competitive dancers plots to take over the world. And if their new routine is good enough, they’ll claw their way to the top at the Boogie Down Grand Prix in Tampa Bay. But in Clare Barron’s raucous pageant of ambition and ferocity, these young dancers have more than choreography on their minds, because every plié and jeté is a step toward finding themselves, and a fight to unleash their power.

Dance Nation is a ferocious exploration of youth, ambition and self-discovery.

“Critic’s Pick! A blazingly original play from the insanely talented Clare Barron - Marvel at how close what you see cuts to the bone.” —BEN BRANTLEY, THE NEW YORK TIMES

“I have seen the future, and it is Dance Nation.” —PETER MARKS, THE WASHINGTON POST

Long Center is thrilled to present the regional premiere of this prize-winning piece in partnership with Theatre en Bloc. In line with their mission to produce quality theatre that is relevant to communities and situations in Austin, TX, there will also be pptional talk backs regarding ambition, the messiness of growing up, and how women are taught to claim or subvert their power following each performance.

The cast includes Amy Downing*, Sarah Danko, Giselle Marie Munoz, Dennis Bailey*, Michael Galvan, Katy Atkinson, Whitney Abraham, Susan Myburgh, and Elise Jacobs*.

DANCE NATION is directed by Jenny Lavery with Production Management by Blake Addyson, Lighting Design by Rachel Atkinson, Set Construction by Jessica Colley-Mitchell, Costume Design by Jenny Hanna-Chambers, Stage Management by Jennifer Hamm, Photography by Errich Petersen, and Jenny Lavery as Producing Artistic Director. DANCE NATION is funded in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
