May. 27 - Jun. 11, 2016
Thursdays-Sundays

Sam Bass Theatre is excited to be producing “Death And The Maiden” by Ariel Dorfman and directed by Veronica Prior. Death and the Maiden features a cast comprised of multiple award winners! With Cathie Sheridan, Robert Stevens, and Frank Benge who all have won awards in the Austin and Central Texas area for their performances.

This political thriller debuted on Broadway in 1992 starring Tony award-winning Glenn Close, Richard Dreyfuss and Gene Hackman. Death and the Maiden is set in an unnamed country that is, like the author's native Chile, emerging from a totalitarian dictatorship. The play explores the after effects of repression on hearts and souls. Paulina Escobar's husband Gerardo is to head an investigation into past human rights abuses. A Dr. Miranda stops at Escobars' to congratulate Gerardo. Paulina overhears them speaking and is convinced that Miranda supervised her prison torture sessions. She ties him to a chair and conducts her own interrogation, gun in hand. Escobar doesn't know whether to believe his distraught wife or his persuasive new friend. This white knuckle thriller is a riveting intellectual and emotional tug of war.

Death And The Maiden is directed by Veronica Prior, who is returning to Sam Bass Theatre for her 20th production as a director. Previously Mrs. Prior served on the Board of Directors for Sam Bass Theatre and directed the critically acclaimed Waiting for Godot which she received an Applause Award from Central Texas Live Theatre. Additionally Mrs. Prior has been awarded multiple times for her costume designs.

The cast of Death And The Maiden features Cathie Sheridan as Paulina Salas. Ms. Sheridan has won 2 Central Texas Excellence In Theatre Awards, 3 Austin Critics Table Awards, and the 2015 Best Actress in a Featured Role from Broadway World Austin. In the Role of Gerardo Escobar is Robert Stevens, Mr. Stevens has been a part of the Austin theatre scene for many years, and has been nominated for multiple B. Iden Payne Awards as well as Austin Critics Table Awards. Most recently Mr. Stevens was seen on stage at City Theatre in their production of Arden of Faversham.
