The Lark
by The Baron's Men

May. 06 - May. 28, 2016
Thursdays-Saturdays

The Baron's Men are excited to present Jean Anouilh's The Lark, adapted by Lillian Hellman. This American adaptation of the play was first performed in 1955; as such, it is the first modern play undertaken by TBM and we look forward to presenting it both faithfully and in period. The 15th century trial of Joan of Arc was one of the best-documented events of its time and kind. In Joan (played by B. Iden Payne award winner Taylor Flanagan), we find a strong female lead whose wit, charisma, and passion move a king, an army, and a nation.

Anouilh's play is a theatrical tour de force: a beautifully written history with a tragic tale at its center that is, nonetheless, infused with wry comedy. The piece treats time as fluid, employing the use of flashbacks and character omniscience to tell the tale of Joan's life, her trial, her death, and her immortality. It is at once a moving portrait of an extraordinary young girl and a glimpse into the often conflicting spiritual and political forces that threaten to destroy her.

In keeping with our artistic mission, the production will be staged for performance at Richard Garriott's Curtain Theatre and will feature period costumes by Dawn Allee, live Medieval French music directed by Cindy Weaver Schaufenbuel, and set design evoking French Gothic architecture by Rodrigo Barajas. We look forward to seeing you there! -Christina Peppas (Director) and Jimmie Bragdon (Producer)
