It is the early 1900s. The field of astronomy is dominated by gifted but provincial men; however, the rigidity of this exclusive atmosphere does not assuage the young and brilliant Henrietta Leavitt from reaching for the stars. Working at the Harvard Observatory, Henrietta is one of several women tasked with assessing and cataloging star charts for an esteemed astronomer. Discontent with performing calculations like a simple computer while “greater” men take credit for her discoveries, Henrietta pushes back against social norms despite the ramifications for her familial and romantic relationships. In Silent Sky, playwright Lauren Gunderson deftly crafts the vivid, true story of Henrietta Leavitt’s personal struggle to break through the glass ceiling while searching for truth and innovation in the heavens.
