MARISELA BARRERA as RICARDO FLORES MAGÓN in

REGENERACIÓN: SAN ANTONIO

REGENERACIÓN: SAN ANTONIO is a new work in progress performance inspired by the life of Ricardo Flores Magón, a journalist and activist in the Mexican Revolution and is written and performed by Marisela Barrera with live music by Jaime Ramírez.

Ricardo Flores Magón, along with his brother Enrique, were exiled from Porfirian Mexico for their revolutionary journalism; the brothers spent time in San Antonio where they published some issues of “Regeneración,” their call-to-action newspaper.  For REGENERACIÓN: SAN ANTONIO, Barrera brings Ricardo Flores Magón to life. She is consulting academic sources plus passages from Eduardo Galeano’s "Memory of Fire" to tell stories that are historically inspired but not 100% historically accurate.  In addition to her creative interpretations, Barrera reveals connections between 1900s Mexico and contemporary US-Mexico social issues.  REGENERACIÓN is presented in preparation for her video performance as Flores Magón with filmmaker Jimmy Mendiola.

Marisela Barrera is a working-class Tejana writer, teatrista, and cultural activist, born from mixed status immigrants along the US Mexico Border. Marisela writes short stories, profiles, and nonfiction essays and turns them into transmedia storytelling performances. Her work has appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, HowlRound, San Antonio Report, Concho River Review, Latina Critical Feminism, Out in SA, Texas Matters, The San Antonio Current, Radio Esperanza 101.5 LP-FM, and TheaterJones, among others. She teaches writing at Northwest Vista College and is a two-time recipient of the National Association for Latino Arts and Culture Fund for the Arts award. Barrera spins and eats fire with Jump-Start Performance Co., where she is a company member. She was recently awarded a 2021 Luminaria Artist Grant to produce a performance video as Ricardo Flores Magón.

Jaime Ramírez is a San Antonio-based music director/composer/pianist with a BA in Music from UTSA. His work has largely been in theater and circus. He was resident Music Director at The Magik Children’s Theatre from 2000-2007 and continues musical direction around the city. He has scored seven professional theatrical productions in San Antonio and been awarded ATAC awards for Best Original Scores in 2010 & 2011 and Best Music Direction in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
