Second Review: The Society for Hard Determinists by Twin Alchemy Collective
by David Glen Robinson

People have different opinions about audience participation, so be aware that this show is 100 percent audience participation. On the other hand, those who prefer to receive their theatre insights sitting comfortably in their seats may be pleasantly surprised at what they can enjoy as the performing guests of honor in this innovative show.

The audience donned hooded robes and plain white masks, and then they were led by the hand through the ritual. With restricted vision and assurances from the guiding adepts, the audience members became the performance.

The progress of the show was advancement through the stages of initiation of this mysterious society formed around a 20th century social philosophy. To gain an idea of this kind of show, mentally review the gothic movies you might have seen, with masked and hooded initiates or adepts in long lines, bearing torches. This performance had all that, except for the torches. Fire marshal’s rules apply even here. And with the darkness and restricted vision it was nevertheless easy to imagine arched Gothic chambers and tunnels as the initiates were led along.

It was all very comfortable. The audience members were led by the hand carefully up stairs and along narrow ways and given gentle instructions for simple tasks. An effect of this, perhaps unrealized by the producers, was for the individual initiates to become very internalized and meditative, feeling that it was all about oneself, not about a ritual going on outside oneself.

Then a bright, colorful video took everyone outside of themselves, almost jarringly, and the emerging group of initiates dissolved into individuality again. If this all seems vague, I aim only to preserve the many effective surprises in this fascinating and original performance ritual.

People who need to be in full physical control and don’t like events imposed on them without their prior approval, in short, those who dislike being led around by the hand with restricted vision, may be reassured. The performers project a warm atmosphere of caring for the initiates and pay close attention to their needs. Remember that world mythology echoes unendingly the lesson that those subjected to restricted vision gain profound insight. Control freaks should give this show a try; they’ll find it instructive.

There were two points of incredible insight and inspiration in the show, given quite simply as gifts to the initiates. One of these came in the middle of the program, the other at the very end. This reviewer walked slowly out into the cool autumn evening, feeling refreshed, affirmed, and well loved.

The Society of Hard Determinists runs through November 2.  It is for the adventurous and those willing to take only one step outside their comfort zones; they will find it insightful, an experience perhaps unlike any they have ever known before.
