Smokey Joe's Cafe
by Wonder Theatre
Aug. 15 - Sep. 14, 2014
Head back to the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm ‘n’ blues as the historic Woodlawn Theatre stages the ultimate musical revue, Smokey Joe’s Café, opening August 15 on the main stage. The show, which features the legendary tunes of Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame giants Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, runs through September 14.
“There’s no dialog, script or plot,” says the show’s director and choreographer Chris Rodriguez. “It’s like stepping into the musical catalog of the tunes that defined a generation.” There will be clapping and toe tapping as the cast belts out beloved Leiber and Stoller songs like On Broadway, Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Stand By Me, Spanish Harlem, Love Potion #9, Yakety Yak and Charlie Brown.
With 2036 performances, Smokey Joe’s Café played on Broadway for five years, making it the longest-running revue in Broadway history. In 1995, Smokey Joe’s Café was nominated for seven Tony Awards, and in 1996, won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
