In a semi-mythical region of rural Spain, the fortunes of multiple families are intricately bound in an unbreakable cycle of murder and revenge. An arranged country marriage and simmering love triangle provides the catalyst to renew a history of violence, dormant but not forgotten. Passions rise to a fever pitch, disrupting the ceremonial and relational bonds of matrimony, and threatening to destroy all involved. Under the light of a watchful and poetic moon, the story gallops towards an unstoppable and tragic conclusion.
BLOOD WEDDING is a staple of the Spanish theatre, filled with Lorca’s image-laden poetry and compelling themes—which many associate as an exploration of forbidden desires, reflecting the personal repression and marginalization he experienced as a homosexual. It also explores forces of social conformity and revenge which can create conditions ripe for violence, perhaps anticipating the rise of fascism in both Spain and elsewhere.

Though some mystery surrounds his death, Lorca was perceived as a threat. He was arrested and assassinated in 1936 at the age of 38. This accessible translation by Lillian Groag, originally commissioned by the Guthrie Theatre, breathes fire and power into Lorca’s work while revealing the timeless nature and modern relevance of his themes.
