Coriolano - A Texican Tragedy
by Walking Shadow Shakespeare

May. 23 - May. 24
Saturday-Sunday

Walking Shadow Shakespeare Project is thrilled to announce that we are bringing Shakespeare to Pease Park for one night only, presenting an original adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. This is the first time this tragedy has been performed in Austin in almost 15 years, and we are so proud of the vision our creative team has crafted to make it engaging and accessible for modern audiences.

Join us to watch the story of a thriving Mexican city as they battle against an invading Texian force. Coriolano, the strongest general, struggles to understand the citizens, and casts them off as lesser than he. This, along with his overbearing mother, creates tension, culminating in a high noon showdown between Coriolano and his nemesis Aufidius. With bilingual actors, this show celebrates the diverse cultures that made (and make) Texas the beautiful cultural landscape that it was, and continues to be.

The team of 28 will assemble from across the city (and country!) to rehearse for the first time just one day before performing, and we can’t wait to see what happens. We have costumes, props, and set pieces all coming together on the same day as our actors. With only moments for fittings and adjustments in person, our work through the spring to design unique pieces for each actor will bring this historical celebration to life!

Director: Andrew Mendoza (he/him), Dramaturg: Demian Chavez Galvan (they/them), Producer: Steph Crugnola (she/her)
