She Was Here is a new play that reflects inherited joys, losses, and longings. Inspired by conversations with Austin Latina elders, the play spans multiple generations within a single inner-city block as characters struggle to find connection to a place they no longer belong. She Was Here provokes audiences to claim their sense of identity, ultimately asking if we can love what makes us different while forgiving what made us that way.
SHE WAS HERE unfolds within the butter-colored walls of an Austin home during the Covid lockdown. Mother and daughter, Amanda and Gabi, stumble upon a hidden box, sparking a journey through time. As they play a game of discovery to unearth forgotten treasures within the house, stories and connections from the past reveal themselves. With humor and heart, the play explores cultural identity, and the people and places that hold us.
"She Was Here springs from the little-known stories of Latinas who shaped central Austin’s culture and communities," says playwright Raul Garza. "Shared in a dynamic context of shifting landscapes, livelihoods, and cultural identities, it is a funny, reflective, heartwarming look at the people and places that hold us."Directed by Jerry Ruiz, the cast features Yesenia García Herrington, Alyssa Hurtado (ARCADIA), Tonie Knight (MURDER ON THE LINKS), and Vivian Noble!The production team also includes scenic & properties design by Teresa Guerrero C., lighting design by Mark Novick, and sound design by Robert S. Fisher.
