What if the world was changing just as you were beginning to understand where you fit in? What if you felt like your feet were cemented to the past, but you wanted to change the future? What if your definition of “Latina” was way beyond what the world told you it should be? This play is based on interviews with Texas Latinas who lived the previous six decades of hardship, joy, transformation, upheaval, and ultimately, survival.

Setting: A butter-colored house on Rainey Street, then and now. Then, Rainey Street was the epicenter of a vibrant Mexican-American community. Now, it is “an entertainment hot spot of bungalows turned bars, high-end hotels and live music venues,” according to the Visit Austin website.

She Was Here is a new play that reflects inherited joys, losses, and longings. Inspired by conversations with Austin Latina elders, the play spans multiple generations within a single inner-city block. as characters struggle to find connection to a place they no longer belong. She Was Here provokes audiences to claim their sense of identity, ultimately asking if we can love what makes us different while forgiving what made us that way.
