SCREAMING INTO THE VOID: Dear Earth and River Spirit
Our Third Annual Screaming Theatre Festival
Jump-Start company member Holly Nañes stages another round of original performances on this (ever) timely trope. .Inspired by this year’s Dear Earth theme, the artists have created dance, theatre and poetry works that convey how love can be found in an uncomfortable foreign place like nature, how grief can be overcome by coming back to yourself with the help of a feral cat and the River Spirit, how serious is the plight of our environment, and how a call to action is encouraged. A kindly abuela, talking animals and an evil villain are each part of this program for all ages.
The festival includes 2nd Date by Irene Chavez Galvan, directed by Ruby R. Ruiz; Tails from the Creek by the SAY Sί A.L.A.S Youth Theater Troupe, directed by Clint Taylor; Dear Earth Child devised and choreographed by Stephan Gaeth; and River Spirit written and directed by Holly Nañes, who received a City of San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture Individual Artist Grant to support the production of her play.
The performing ensemble includes Melissa Martinez, Mark Riojas, Anna Rios, Jacque Salame, Janie Sauceda, Catie Carlisle, Devon Moreno, Stephan Gaeth and Ricky Brand.
Part of Screaming’s purpose is to offer a platform for seasoned and emerging artists in multiple disciplines to work alongside each other, supporting, learning and creating together to lift San Antonio’s community voice. Jump-Start Performance Co. is dedicated to the discovery and support of new ideas in the arts and arts
education. By encouraging visionary thought and non-traditional approaches, Jump-Start is committed to the creation of art that is a lasting voice of diverse cultures and communities.
