Be transported by acclaimed British 60s-wild-child fashion designer Dame Zandra Rhodes's vivid production in this heartrending story about the struggle between friendship and love. During a flurry of festivities, as the pearl fishers choose their chief, best friends swear that love will never challenge their friendship again. The arrival of a veiled priestess tests the power of their bond. A battle ensues between friendship and love as secrets are revealed and vows are broken.

 

The Pearl Fishers is directed by Alison Moritz with choreography by Austin Dance India Founder Anuradha Naimpally and conducting the Austin Opera Orchestra is the Sarah and Ernest Butler Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor Timothy Myers. Vowing friendship and vying for love are two Austin newcomers who bring the instantly recognizable duet, “Au fond du temple saint,” to life this spring. Grammy-winning baritone Will Liverman, who starred in the Metropolitan Opera’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones last season makes his role and company debut as Zurga. Zurga’s best friend and love rival, Nadir is sung by internationally renowned tenor and San Antonio-native, David Portillo. Rounding out the powerful trio as Leïla is no stranger to the Austin Opera stage, soprano Madison Leonard.
