The departed souls of a small Illinois town speak to us about their lives.  This Reader’s Theater production is a selection of the poems written as eulogies from the people who died.  When published as a novel in 1915, it was considered controversial as some of the characters seemed to some to represent people in his home town and the nearby town where his grandmother lived.  It was a huge commercial success at the time.  Edgar Lee Masters, one time law partner of Clarence Darrow, broke the myth of small town virtue with over 200 characters telling stories from the grave, some scandolous, some based on true people of the time, often thinly disguised.
