The Cricket on the Hearth

Fridays-Sundays
Dickens’ heartwarming Christmas tribute brings a genial spirit into the festivities as Mr. Tackleton, much like Ebeneezer Scrooge, is changed through the course of the story, into a better person. In "The Cricket on the Hearth", the Peerybingle household is watched over by a cricket who is the household’s guardian angel. He represents the spirit of the Victorian ideal of a happy home. Things get interesting when a mysterious stranger rents lodging and when all the household’s lives become entwined in those of the poor toymaker Caleb Plummer, his blind daughter Bertha, the miser Tackleton, and Tackleton’s unwilling fiancee May Fielding. With great plot points of suspense, intrigue, and mistaken identity along the way, the audience wonders if it will turn out all right. Published in 1845, this story of love at Christmastime has long been a popular ‘sequel’ to Dickens’ holiday favorite, “A Christmas Carol,” originally published in 1843.
