The Repentance of Saint Joan
by Paper Chairs
Mar. 23 - Apr. 07, 2018
Thursdays-Saturdays
paper chairs invites you to The Repentance of Saint Joan, a new play by Austin playwright Patrick Shaw. Join us March 23- April 7th, 2018 at the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems as we blend personal narrative with a historical account of the patron saint of France.
The Hundred Years War was ages ago and the two surviving people who knew Joan of Arc best, her high school boyfriend/page and her sibling/ historical expert, can’t agree on how it went down before her death. Was Joan really a devoutly religious servant to King Charles or was she a keen young woman who understood the power of violence? We each have a version of Joan as her legacy lives on outside the historical record. Who does she speak to now? What happens in her name?
The Repentance of Saint Joan asks us to consider the intimate details of human life that go overlooked in tidy versions of history. It dares to ask what truths cannot be verified and leads us through a version of the past where recorded history and personal memory turn against one another.
