You can’t stop the beat when Tracy Turnblad shakes up her hometown of Baltimore in this fabulous 60s musical! Tracy’s innocent desire to dance on The Corny Collins Show catches her in a whirlwind of fame as she challenges the social prejudices of race and beauty.

“As I was doing research for this show, I remembered an article I read from the Express News that detailed how San Antonio was the first southern city in the US to integrate lunch counters.  To little fanfare, San Antonio paved the way for other major southern cities to follow suit. Community and religious leaders came together to plan this milestone, much like the characters in “Hairspray” come together to help integrate a teen dance show. I have walked past the old Woolworth Department Store building many times downtown and had no idea that a major civil rights event took place right here in my beloved city.  Fast forward to today, and we are still coming together to organize and fight for people’s rights: immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, healthcare rights, etc...  What’s even more impressive is that people who look like Edna and Tracy can, and are, still making a difference today.  It is my wish that you walk away from this show feeling empowered to create and instill change. So let the words of Motormouth Maybelle resonate in your ear: “Nobody said this was going to be easy. If something’s worth having, it’s worth fighting for.”
