"Ella" is a dance theatre performance project, devised collaboratively by Lotus Contemporary Performing Arts and ProyectoTEATRO, that challenges the patriarchal "values" placed on women and womanhood since the forming of our modern society. “Ella” rebuilds the female perspective through life-experiences of women themselves by dismantling the values that have long-shaped women, which most often oppress and subjugate. Values of femininity, motherhood, and feminism that were created and are supervised by everyone except women…or who defines women? Men? Society? She herself? From artists and literary characters like María Félix and Anna Karenina, to social issues like the abortion debate, body image and women right’s, “Ella” explores the vast meaning behind what it really means to be woman in modern times.
The project was devised by the cast of dancers and actors, led by artistic directors Melissa Villarreal (Lotus) and Luis Ordaz Gutiérrez (ProyectoTEATRO) and uses theatre and contemporary dance to build scenes of reflection, anger, laughter and love.
