Experience the timeless storytelling of West Side Story in this electrifying production that pays homage to the genius collaboration of Leonard Bernstein's unforgettable music and Stephen Sondheim's poignant lyrics. Set against the backdrop of 1950s New York City, this iconic tale of love and rivalry takes center stage as two young lovers from opposing gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, navigate the tumultuous streets. With Sondheim's lyrical mastery and Bernstein's sweeping compositions, every note and word comes alive in a symphony of emotions, showcasing the power of love and the tragic consequences of hate. This spectacular performance brings musical theatre to life in a way only Sondheim and Bernstein can.
Director Rick Sanchez adds, “Collaboration has always been a key theme for West Side Story. As the director of our West Side Story production, I'm thrilled about the collaboration with Ballet San Antonio, echoing Bernstein's vision of unifying multiple art forms in one performance. Not only does the theater have Rafael Ferreras from Ballet San Antonio set to choreograph, but the production will feature four ballet dancers from the ballet company performing alongside actors from the San Antonio community. Working with local talent and the ballet company enriches our narrative, infusing it with ballet’s elegance and emotional depth. Bernstein and Robbins intended West Side Story to transcend mere musical theatre. West Side Story intertwines opera, ballet, Shakespeare, and symphonic orchestrations in one setting. The theater aims to create a compelling experience, resonating with audiences by showcasing the universal themes of love, conflict, and societal tensions in a unique and powerful way."
