Funding Appeal: CYRANO DE BERGERAC by Rostand, Archive Theatre at Scottish Rite Theatre, September, 2019

(Video promo from Archive Theatre at INDIEGOGO)

Cyrano de Bergerac is an epic story of romance and adventure. Though written in the 19th century, its themes of unrequited love, loneliness, and fear of self expression resonate deeply with our modern lives. In a world where integrity and honor have become neglected virtues, Cyrano de Bergerac reminds us that being true to yourself is worth sacrificing everything. This production will run the month of September 2019 at the Austin Scottish Rite Theater.

Jennifer Davis has been a part of the Austin theater scene in various capacities for the last 10 years. She is often called a Renaissance woman because her talents include costume design, graphic design, acting, directing, writing, and more. In 2012, Jennifer began to explore options for producing and directing Cyrano de Bergerac, a story that she has loved since childhood. As part of this exploration she translated a scene from the play to see which of the transactions she had available came closest to the original. Somehow one scene became two, and then three, and then a whole river of words that flowed into an entirely new translation of this beloved play.

Enter Garrison Martt, longtime-friend and theater colleague of Jennifer Davis. Garrison and Jennifer have been making theater together in different aspects for nearly 20 years. When he heard this new translation, he entered the project with his enthusiasm, vast knowledge of directing and crafting theater, and funding. Together with talented friends, Joes Stephenson, Carrie Casey, and James Barnes, Jennifer and Garrison formed the Archive Theater Company, primarily to bring this translation of Cyrano to Austin audiences.

Here is where you come in. We have currently raised about of quarter of the funds needed for this production. We're asking you to help us raise half the funds needed before the production begins. Your contributions will allow us to reward the fine actors and artists that are creating this beautiful story and world. They will help us rent and purchase materials like the gorgeous fabrics, flashing sword blades, plumed hats, elegant costumes, and all the other pieces needed to create this elaborate 17th-century world.

The Archive Theater's goal is to raise $5,000, which will match the funds that we already have gathered to produce this show.  If we do not obtain our goal, whatever we raise will go first to our artist's salaries, and then to the other needs of the production.
