VIRGINIE GAUTREAU the Madame X of the title. Age 23. Strong anglar features, Oftentimes cold, but flirtatious in her fashion.
JOHN SINGER SARGENT Age 25. The portrait painter before his success. An American brought up in Europe. Unusually intense gaze.
BEN DEL CASTILLO, his friend: age 27. the quintessential Italian of breeding. A fellow of independent means. The most sanguine of men; a gossip at times; a manipulator at heart.
VIOLET PAGET (nom de plume: Vernon Lee) about the same age. Friend of Sargent's since childhood. A gadfly. Witty: called her contemporaries a female: Oscar Wilde.
