She Was Here
by Austin Playhouse
Sep. 23 - Oct. 04
What if the world was changing just as you were beginning to understand where you fit in? What if you felt like your feet were cemented to the past, but you wanted to change the future? What if your definition of “Latina” was way beyond what the world told you it should be?
This play is based on interviews with Texas Latinas who lived the previous six decades of hardship, joy, transformation, upheaval, and ultimately, survival.
Setting: A butter-colored house on Rainey Street, then and now. Then, Rainey Street was the epicenter of a vibrant Mexican-American community. Now, it is “an entertainment hot spot of bungalows turned bars, high-end hotels and live music venues,” according to the Visit Austin website.
