Top Dog/Underdog
by Viceroys

Jan. 28 - Jan. 31, 2016
Thursday-Sunday

Centered around 3-Card Monte, part card game and part scam, 'Topdog/Underdog' paints an electrifingly intimate portrait of sibling rivalry. In a cramped, shared apartment, brothers Lincoln and Booth engage in constant verbal combat, as the truths of their relationship become increasingly magnified. This play serves as an exploration of masculinity, identity, and brotherhood in a fast paced battle of wits.

Viceroys, a black-owned artist collective, launches their inaugural mark in the theatre community with "Topdog/Underdog," a two-man drama, presenting a gripping tale of sibling rivalry at the peak of eruption. Jarrett King and Matthew Frazier are noted performers in Austin and New York City, respectively. Together, they co-founded Viceroys to create opportunity for artists of color through roles that directly tackle societal norms.

"Topdog/Underdog" received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2002, and playwright Suzan-Lori Parks recently became the first African American woman awarded the 22nd $300,000 Gish Prize, in recognition of artists who have made an extraordinary impact.

About Viceroys: Viceroys strives to awaken the need for artistic contact. With a focus on the human condition, and a commitment to producing work that challenges societal norms. Viceroys directly engages the community through explorations of how unheard voices resonate in our modern society. Co-founded by actors Matthew Frazier & Jarrett King, this collective launches its inaugural production with "Topdog/Underdog," to bring attention to a once prominent arts district in East Austin.
