Tales of Lost Southtown
by Jump-Start Performance Company
Mar. 21 - Mar. 30, 2014
What is the secret elevator code that allows access to the series of ancient tunnels beneath the Tower of the Americas? At just what address on East Guenther Street can one find a homemade time machine? Who has the keys to Pedro Morales' fabled love nest? These questions are answered in Tales of Lost Southtown.
Tales of Lost Southtown, a new work by Jump-Start Performance Co. member Erik Bosse, examines the cultural changes facing San Antonio's downtown neighborhoods in a production combining autobiographical experience and magical realism, presented in a multimedia hybrid of video and live theater. Bosse, who has lived in the Southtown neighborhood for a decade, takes a witty look at the meanderings of the borders of gentrification that are currently transforming the Southtown area, creating disharmony for some and the promise of opportunity for others. One moment wry, the next caustic, Tales of Lost Southtown uses video and live performances in an innovative and fluid manner to examine, with warmth and affection, the offbeat characters of this unique part of town.
Presented as a series of inter-related stories, the script is based on short stories written by Bosse over the years about the place that he calls home. Known more as a filmmaker, this project is Bosse’s first foray into writing for the stage. He is joined in presenting this work with director Laurie Dietrich, as well as a cast of fellow Jump-Start company members Lisa Suarez, Chuck Squier, Kim Corbin, Pamela Dean Kenny, and others.
This production reunites Jump-Start and URBAN-15, organizations that share artistic and aesthetic roots, having grown together as the grassroots art movement found its feet in San Antonio some 30 years ago. In keeping with the shared values of both organizations for community engagement and collaboration, each performance will feature a guest appearance by a different community artist.
