A Black, recent widower and his daughters move to Brooklyn for a better life. Not knowing how to parent, he turns to others for answers, namely his sister-in-law who stands for everything he dislikes. As the racial and social issues of the late 1950s escalate, personal issues between the two explode, prompting him to walk out.

A few days later, he returns, with a new wife—a white, German immigrant, and life in the household gets heated.
