The year is 1934. Germany struggles through economic and social disaster until the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. Consolidating their power, the Nazis begin the Night of Long Knives, a settling of old scores to complete their rise to power. Amidst the violence, the gay men of Germany are caught in the snares of the reinforced German law prohibiting homosexuality. In these first years of Nazi Power, the long untold persecution of gay men in Germany began. Here, in Martin Sherman’s 1979 play, the story of the men who wore the pink triangle of homosexuality in Dachau is depicted. Bent tells the story of these men and, in the process, shows the powerful and lasting universality of humanity and love.
