You've heard the phrase "all the world's a stage," but the cast and crew of the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens' Shakespeare Under the Stars production of As You Like It truly take it to heart. Shakespeare Under the Stars (SUS) is a six week intensive Shakespeare program for students ages 12-18 and is now in its eighteenth year at the EmilyAnn. It has served as a home for many young actors creating a life for themselves in the world of theatre. In fact, the majority of this year's staff members are returning alumni themselves. Costume designer Sally Rath is spending her seventh summer at the EmilyAnn this year, and her fourth as an instructor. She is constantly amazed by "the creative energy" her students have. Set designer Steve Moncus seconds this by noting that his favorite part of the program is collaborating with his students. This mentality is what sets the Shakespeare Under the Stars program apart from others. Students get hands-on experience with every aspect of producing a full-length show. Not only do they work tirelessly for six weeks developing their characters and attending professional workshops, but they also spend many a hot afternoon on stage constructing their set and laboring over costumes-all because they love what they do.

As You Like It is a classic Shakespeare comedy. It follows the heroine Rosalind, outcast from her land, as she travels through the Forest of Arden. It is a wild tale of persecution, love and deceit. As veteran SUS actor Caitlin Iliff put it, the show has a unique ability to let the actors "carry on a conversation" with each audience. High School senior Kendra Patch commented on how relatable the show is for today's audiences. Young love is just as unpredictable as it always has been.

The consensus from everyone involved with Shakespeare Under the Stars is simple: they're all a family. Assistant Costumer Aleah Petmecky remembers being welcomed with open arms, and Caitlin Iliff describes her fellow students as her soul mates. Director Bridget Farias Gates even tears up when she thinks about how much her students grow in such a short time. They constantly inspire her, and as she puts it, "they ARE the program."

By summer intern,  Hunter Sosby, a recent graduate of Wimberley High School and long-time friend of the EmillyAnn.  Thank you Hunter!
