Aliens, Immigrants & Other Evildoers
by SALTA

Jun. 19 - Jun. 20, 2015
Friday-Saturday

A sci-fi Latino noir one-man show  takes immigration head on by satirizing the status of immigrants as “extraterrestrials” and “exposes the hypocrisies of a system that vilifies the same people whose labor it exploits.” The show has sold out theaters across the country, including ones at Vanderbilt University and the L.A. Theater Center.

In partnership with the National Performance Network, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center will host award-winning performance artist José Torres-Tama for a weeklong residency from June 15-21. The residency will include student workshops, performances, and a “live art” lecture.

“José will resonate with a diverse audience,” said Guadalupe interim performance arts director Joel Settles. “As the struggle for immigrant rights continues to be a major issue for our country and our region in particular, this production explores it in an entertaining and thought provoking way. Immigration continues to be a controversial issue, which means it is a necessary issue for us to explore through art and performance.”

The week of residency will end with a free Immigrant Rights Forum on Sunday, June 21 at 2:00 pm at the Guadalupe Theater headed by Torres-Tama’s lecture Art & Social Change: The Artist as Provocateur. During this “live art” event, Torres-Tama will transform the traditional lecture into a multimedia, hybrid social commentary on the Latino immigrant experience, the mythology of the “American Dream,” and issues on immigration reform through short film presentations, performance and visual art, new media and poetry.
