Hasty Retreat proudly brings to the stage at Playhouse Smithville “Agnes of God”, a long-running hit on Broadway, directed by AJ Fuex.

Agnes of God, explores on an intimate level the debate between faith and science in its three main characters: Agnes, Mother Miriam Ruth, and Dr. Martha Livingstone.

The play, loosely based on a true story, involves the discovery by the police of a deceased child in the wastepaper basket in the room of Agnes (Charla May Cason) at a cloistered convent of nuns of a contemplative order.  Agnes declares no memory of a pregnancy, of giving birth, or of how the child perished.  Dr. Martha Livingstone (Alicia Moses Gust) is appointed by the State to analyze Agnes and get the truth.  She is met by, and clashes with, the defensive and obstinate Mother Miriam Ruth (Alana Adams), who seeks to protect not only the reputation of the Church she cherishes, but also the mentally and emotionally vulnerable Agnes from the harm she believes will come to Agnes if questioned by the Doctor.

As the story progresses all three characters find themselves battling their inner demons, and questioning their own definitions of spirituality, love, belief, and reality.

In the end, the mystery of Agnes is revealed to a degree but at a great price.  Do we annihilate ethereal faith and beauty in the quest for the literal truth?   Emotionally intense adult drama.
