Sex-positive sci-fi circus show to feature aerial acrobats, burlesque artists, live music
Sky Candy and director Rudy Ramirez are thrilled to announce their collaboration on Agent Andromeda: The Orion Crusade, a sex-positive sci-fi romp through the stars, running September 9 - 24, 2016, in a galaxy far far away…. somewhere in East Austin.
“Sky Candy and I started talking about how much we loved Barbarella and how well a story like that would work with aerials back when we were rehearsing Cosmicomics- I wanted to build from the campy sexiness of Barbarella and make something that spoke to what we think and feel and fear and love about sexuality today. We've gone beyond Barbarella to borrow from and parody everything from Star Wars and Mad Max to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Underneath it all, though, there's a beautiful, beating heart that my playwriting soulmate Reina Hardy has crafted from our discussions, about how people--particularly young women--often come into their sexuality with very little guidance and a whole lot of awkwardness. I really could not be more excited for this. This show feels like everything I have loved for most of my life in this glorious, sparkly jumble.“

Agent Andromeda: The Orion Crusade is the latest collaboration between director Rudy Ramirez and East Austin aerial and circus company Sky Candy, both B. Iden Payne award-winners, who previously brought to life Italo Calvino’s short stories about life in the early universe, Cosmicomics. They have brought on internationally produced playwright Reina Hardy to write the script based on ensemble workshops, while local musician Tyler Mabry will contribute all-new original songs, performed live by singer Jennifer Coy. The design team will include recent Austin Critics’ Table winner for Lighting Design Patrick Anthony, UT MFA Costume Designer E.L. Hohn, Makeup, Hair, & Wig design by the award-winning Blood & Glitter Makeup and, returning to Austin for the first time, acclaimed set designer Ia Enstera.
The cast features Caroline Poe as Agent Andromeda, Ginger Snaps, Andy Agne, Chris Humphrey, Jackie Stone, Julie Cullen, Julie Moore, Lacy Alana, Helios, Shannon Grounds, Lola LeStrange, Micah Gause, and Tango Beauthwaise.

About Rudy Ramirez
Rudy Ramirez is a director, writer, performer and teaching artist specializing in the development of new work. Most recently, his world premiere production of Gabriel Jason Dean’s Terminus was named Best Production of a Drama by the Austin Critics’ Table. He has received three B. Iden Payne Awards for Outstanding Direction (Sing Muse: Direction of Music Theatre, 2013; Qualities of Starlight: Direction of a Comedy, 2013; The Physicists: Direction of Theatre for Youth, 2011), and was nominated for his previous collaboration with Sky Candy, Cosmicomics, in 2014. He was a finalist for the 2015 NNPN National Director’s Fellowship and currently serves as Associate Artistic Director for The VORTEX Repertory Company. He has also directed for the Austin Bike Zoo, Shrewd Productions, TeatroVivo and the University of Texas at Austin. This is his second collaboration with Sky Candy and his fourth with Reina Hardy, for whom he has directed world premiere productions of Stars and Barmen (The VORTEX, 2013) and Changelings (The VORTEX, 2015) as well as a workshop of Fanatical, her musical co-written with Matt Board (American Demigods, 2014).
