Sacred Balance - The Dance of Shiva and Shakti
by Austin Dance India

May. 31
Sunday

Sacred Balance: The Dance of Shiva and Shakti explores the eternal interplay between the divine feminine and masculine. Shakti, the Goddess in her many faces — fierce and tender, radiant and wild — and Shiva, destroyer of illusion and guardian of the sacred, come alive through original choreography rooted in classical lineage.

Featuring live music and a curated selection of dances dedicated to Shiva and Devi, the program weaves together powerful rhythm, expressive storytelling, and classical movement to highlight themes of creation, transformation, compassion, and cosmic balance. Rooted in lineage-based Bharata Natyam, from southern India, the performance offers audiences a profound artistic journey into Indian sacred mythology while highlighting the dynamic unity of Shiva and Shakti ascomplementary forces that sustain the universe.

ABOUT AUSTIN DANCE INDIA (ADI):

Austin Dance India, founded in 1990 by Artistic Director Anuradha Naimpally, has become Austin’s premiere organization and resource for Indian classical Bharata Natyam dance in Austin, TX. ADI strives to bring the highest quality dance to the stage through an accessible presentation style.

This year, ADI pivots their focus–after 35 years–from offering weekly ongoing classes to a newly created performing ensemble that will choreograph and present new works. The ensemble includes Anuradha Naimpally, Purna Bajekal, Soumya Nagesh, Geeti Shirazi Mahajan, and Yaamini Coffey. Sacred Balance: The Dance of Shiva and Shakti is their debut performance with live music. In addition, Purna Bajekal, longtime ADI dancer and teacher, who has been assisting Naimpally for many years, has officially been named Assistant Director.

Accompanying the ADI Ensemble is a world class musical group, with a mix of touring and Texas artists, led by award winning vocalist Vidwan Siva Prasad NN from Mumbai, India. On nattuvangam (rhythmic vocals) is Houston based Surabi Veeraragavan with Germany based mridangist (percussionist), Vidwan Prasanth. On flute is Vidwan Kumar Babu touring from India. These artists have been working closely with ADI in recent years on various projects, creating a wonderful synergy that is reflected on stage.
