Sweeney Todd

Nov. 18 - Nov. 23
Tuesday-Sunday
Texas State University's School of Theatre, Dance, and Film presents Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, November 18-23, 2025, in the Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre.Directed by Tom Delbello, with choreography by Brooke Cox, a senior in Musical Theatre, and music direction by Aimee Radics, this musical thriller will draw the audience into the sinister depths of Fleet Street. Haunting and riveting, this Sweeney Todd will keep audiences on the edge of their seats as the world around them transforms.
The story follows Sweeney Todd (Riley Thornton), a barber unjustly exiled, bent on vengeance. He forms a dark partnership with Mrs. Lovett (Malia McLellan), a proprietress of a failing pie shop. Together, they are a bloody success. Attend this reimagined tale featuring: Brendan Behm (Anthony Hope), Simone Straub-Clark (Johanna Barker), Bryan Fortunato (Tobias), Jordan Spena (Judge Turpin), Grisham Locke (Beadle Bamford), Ryan Sytsema (Adolfo Pirelli), and Hannah Jenkins (Beggar Woman).
On-stage musicians feature ensemble members Sophie Beck on violin, Kyler Huyse on concertina, Jerard Mosley II on percussion, and Hailey Truong on guitar. Joining them is the ensemble comprised of Camila Abraham, Drew Barber, Zach Feeney, Michelle Ko, Caroline Davenport, Sebi Reyes-Farinas, Abbigayle Scott, Joe Schindler, and Ian Yamada.
This production reimagines Sweeney Todd as a dark, gripping tale told during a Newfoundland kitchen party in the early 1970s. A tight-knit ensemble transforms into storytellers, weaving a narrative of revenge, love, and obsession. Rooted in Newfoundland's tradition of exaggerated, humorous, and dark storytelling, the community becomes complicit in the events, highlighting their role in witnessing and perpetuating cycles of violence and injustice. Through their rich culture and traditions, the storytellers blend ominous melodies with the warmth of a coastal community.
The creative team includes Max Estudillo Cantú, scenic designer; Tiffany Yeager, costume designer; AJ Rose, lighting designer; Scott Murdock, sound designer; Colin Shay, technical director; and Emma Frances Frith, production stage manager.
