Calling
by Overtime Theater

Jul. 11 - Aug. 02
Fridays-Saturdays

Follow River and Kami on their journey of self-discovery as artists working a 9 to 5.  Hope and perseverance attempt to take center stage in a call center through spoken word poetry and HR robots.

Family Friendliness Rating: recommended for 18+ audiences

The Overtime is extremely excited to have a production from celebrated author and award-winning slam poet Georgie Lee opening this July.  Calling was developed by Lee as part of the San Pedro Playhouse’s South Texas Playwright Lab under former artistic director Claudia DeVasco. Overtime Theater President Rob Barron said “Georgie has been a part of the Overtime family for several years now and we have been excited about watching them develop this play for the entire time!  San Antonio audiences are not prepared for what they will be presented with in this show!”

In Calling Lee presents a group of friends led by non-binary poet River who all work together in a call center.  The job can be soul sucking but the group use the money to support the art that they create after work.  “You work the 9 to 5 so you can do the art from 5 to 9” as Lee says.  The story is presented not just through the play’s writing but also through spoken-word poetry which relays the characters internal monologues like a musical where the music is served as a side dish.

Dedicated to providing original, innovative, and accessible entertainment at an affordable price, The Overtime Theater is a nonprofit organization with the mission of bringing “theater for the people” to the San Antonio community through new and thought-provoking stage productions.
