Thursdays-Sundays
The Originalist, a critically acclaimed compelling political drama by John Strand, invites audiences into the chambers of the U.S. Supreme Court for a story of ideological clashes, unexpected mentorship, and the search for common ground.
Engaging, thought-provoking, and deeply human, The Originalist offers a timely reflection on the ideological divides that shape our world today. The play challenges audiences to listen, empathize, and consider how we might bridge the gaps that divide us. Don’t miss this unforgettable theatrical experience.
Directed by Unity’s Executive Artistic Director Kate Revnell-Smith, The Originalist explores the dynamic relationship between a bright liberal Harvard Law School graduate and conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, whom she serves as a clerk. What begins as a fiery intellectual sparring match evolves into a profound exploration of their deeply held beliefs. As they debate, challenge, and learn from one another, audiences are prompted to consider: Can we find middle ground amidst even the most polarized differences?
The production features Kyle Sturdivant (The Crucible, A Tuna Christmas, Mrs. Mannerly) as Antonin Scalia, Erisha Jones (Unity Theatre debut) as Cat, and Nathan Wilson (The Star-Spangled Girl, The Game’s Afoot, Crimes of the Heart) as Brad. The design team includes Ryan Eisworth as Sound Designer, John Wind as Lighting Designer, and Alan Will as Stage Manager.
