Reckless
by City Theatre Company

Dec. 06 - Dec. 22
Thursdays-Sundays

It's Christmas Eve, and Rachel Fitzsimmons' euphoric existence is shattered when she learns her husband has done something recklessly unexpected. She escapes into a snowstorm and is swept away into the most fractured of fairy tales filled with crazed killers, insane therapists, over the top game show hosts, would-be paraplegics, and so much more. Craig Lucas’s dark holiday comedy is a hilarious - and very poignant – fifteen year journey forcing us to face, head on, the slipperiness of fate and the hope of coming home again.

Ring in the holidays with the wickedly funny comedy RECKLESS by Craig Lucas

“The past is something you wake up to…something you wake up to every day.” – Lloyd, Reckless

The New York Times calls the Craig Lucas's twisted holiday comedy “a bittersweet Christmas fable for our time. It’s A Wonderful Life as it might be reimagined.”

"How much must we endure in order to learn who we really are?" – Craig Lucas

Craig Lucas is an American playwright, screenwriter, theatre director, actor, and film director. Born in 1951, and abandoned in a car in Atlanta, he began his career as a New York-based playwright in the 1980’s. The success of his 1990 film Longtime Companion established him as an important contributor to the dramatic literature born of the AIDS Crisis. And, although Lucas is identified with the gay theatre community of his time, the characteristic themes address broad issues of life’s absurdity, the uncontrollable nature of relationships, and the arbitrary nature of fate. His embrace of absurdity is reflected in so many stories, including his highly successful play, Reckless. Lucas has received fellowships from the Guggenheim, the Rockefeller Foundations, and The National Endowment for the Arts. Awards include an OBIE Award, American Academy of Arts and Sciences Award, the Outer Critics, and Drama-Logue Awards. He received Tony Award nominations for An American in Paris and Light in the Piazza and was nominated for the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Prelude to a Kiss. He is said to “fuse two directions in contemporary theatre,” mixing the naturalistic vision of playwrights like Lanford Wilson with the exaggerated comedy of satirists like Christopher Durang. His newest plays include Change Agent, and I Was Most Alive With You which opened off-Broadway in 2018.

The show is led by guest director Tracy Arnold who has directed the City Theatre celebrated shows Calendar Girls, The Graduate, Bus Stop, All My Sons, and Christmas Belles. It features the amazing cast of Erin Kessler, Zachary Gamble, Shane Cullum, Veranika Ball, Tracy Hurd, Jesse Griffith, Cindy Timms, and Laura Duff.
