Waiting for Godot
by Hyde Park Theatre
Dec. 05 - Dec. 21
Thursdays-Saturdays
Our HPT production may be the last Godot in the country before Bill & Ted (i.e. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter) open their Broadway production next fall. So we’ve decided to make it a great one.
It will be directed by Mark Pickell, who for many years before the pandemic produced three shows a year at HPT via his own company, Capital T. You’ve almost certainly seen one: IT IS MAGIC (three witches & the three little pigs make theater?): There is a Happines That Morning Is (English professors overcome by William Blake’s poetry have sex on the college lawn?); Killer Joe (very scary nudity?); Fool for Love, The Brothers Size, that one with an obscene hand puppet? Mark’s shows were nominated for and won many, many awards, and we’re thrilled to have him directing a show for us.
Actors: HPT Artistic Director Ken Webster as Vladimir! Robert Pierson (Caught, IT IS MAGIC) as Estragon. The astonishing, formidable Titos Menchaca returns to the Austin stage (FINALLY) as Pozzo. And Matt Hislope of the brilliantly, disturbingly weird Austin company Rubber Rep plays Lucky. Grant Pickell is the boy.
And as for the play: Beckett's wildly funny, somewhat tragic, and acutely human play is a classic for a reason: it’s an existential comedy for uncertain times—maybe you’re experiencing those right now.
