In A Margaret Atwood Minute, or The Book Bitch
by Overtime Theater

Jun. 07 - Jun. 29
Fridays-Saturdays

It’s the not-too-distant future and the country is under siege—books are being banned left and right, gay marriage has been outlawed, gender studies, Latinx studies and Africana studies are a thing of the past, flags that dare stray outside the carefully colored lines of the “red, white, and blue” are no longer allowed. Luce Calderón, one time gender studies professor now representative of the Books for a Better Life lobby, fights the good fight—for her country, for her freedoms, for her relationship with her partner Barb, and for her precious books. With the help of some special-op literarians, the outraged ghost of one Frida Kahlo, along with a few other characters invested in seeing the “powers that be” taken down, Luce will embark upon a hero’s journey fit for a dystopia worthy of a Margaret Atwood saga.

“As a Hispanic person with friends and loved ones scattered throughout the queer community, I find that this story does an incredible job of depicting the struggles of defending your way of life and everything you stand for,” director Alejandra Mortimer said. “It can be scary and isolating, but it’s important to keep that fighting spirit, even when it feels like you’re the only one fighting for it.”

The Overtime Theater prides itself on discussing hard-hitting topics that affect communities currently. “The reality of the world we live in is that many of the themes present in this show mirror important issues that are rising in modern society,” Mortimer said. “Showcasing a story with queer representation and important issues on a San Antonio stage is more crucial now than it ever has been.”

“Producing this show at The Overtime Theater was a deliberate choice to bring topics such as book bans, gender studies, queer POC representation up front and center. We are in the midst of dealing with book bans in schools and consistently see current legislation skirting the line of the separation of church and state,” said Artistic Director Angie Hernandez. “We are proud to feature a diverse cast, full of local talent bringing to life the complex characters Anne Valentino has created and use this production as a platform to open a dialogue about these difficult topics.”

Performances run June 7 - 29, 2024, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, with one Sunday matinee on June 23 at 2 PM, and Pay-What-You-Will night on Thursday, June 13 at 8 PM. The Overtime Theater is located at 5409 Bandera Road, Suite 205 on the city’s northwest side. General admission tickets are $18, or $12 for SATCO members, military and students with a valid ID. “This talented and colorful cast is working hard, dedicated to bringing this story to life in its truest form. Audiences can anticipate a moving experience with acts of rebellion, passion, romance, and even some occasional lighthearted humor.” director Alejandra Mortimer said. >
