Tiny Beautiful Things
by Deaf Austin Theatre
May. 10 - May. 26
Fridays-Sundays
Based on the bestselling book by Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, Tiny Beautiful Things personifies the questions and answers that “Sugar” was publishing online from 2010-2012. When struggling writer Strayed was asked to take over the unpaid, anonymous position of advice columnist, she used empathy and her personal experiences to help those seeking guidance for obstacles both large and small.
Review by Cat McCarry, Austin Chronicle, May 23, 2024
Tiny Beautiful Things is a play about reaching when you’re stuck, healing when you’re broken, and finding the courage to take on the questions that have no answers.
Warnings: Please be advised that “Tiny Beautiful Things” has strong language and discusses the themes of depression, drug abuse, sexual assault and physical abuse. The play is recommended for adults.
Tiny Beautiful Things follows the relationships between an anonymous advice columnist named Sugar and the many real-life readers who pour out their hearts to her. Academy Award nominee Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) adapts Strayed’s book into an enrapturing and uplifting play that surges with emotion and was called by Variety “a theatrical hug in turbulent times.”
Tissues recommended. Contains strong language and adult content.
