In the Beginning
by Grackle Jack

Feb. 02 - Feb. 11, 2023
Thursdays-Saturdays

In this garden, we’re starting over. Inflatable friends. Ballet. Apocalyptic disco. A wild one-woman dum dum show where Adam floats by, The Fruit isn’t what you think, and a sheep proves labels create limits.

Using comedy, satire, non-traditional storytelling structures, puppets, and a pool party aesthetic, In The Beginning invites the audience to imagine the possibilities of their own genesis and to reclaim their beginnings alongside each other,

Grackle Jack Productions creates original comedic performances around current social issues with the goal to use humor and vulnerability to access a new understanding. Known for its inspired use of puppetry, clown, drag, music, and text, the company works from incongruent historical events and literature as source material, blending and mapping divergent strands into multifaceted performance. Led by Artistic Director CB Goodman, Grackle Jack has examined and adapted events from Topsy the elephant’s public execution in 1903, the invention of the DARPA hummingbird drone, and the Apollo 11 Mission. From literature, the company has delved into works from Roxanne Gay, George Saunders, Gaston Bachelard, Tony Robbins, and the Brothers Grimm.

Generating each piece for Grackle Jack takes months and sometimes years of collaboration with an ever-evolving group of directors, actors, puppeteers, composers, and designers. Each project honors its own incubation period and requires new combinations of artists in order to keep the work alive and meet the specific needs of the show.

In 2018, Grackle Jack and En Route Productions co-produced the drag puppetry self-help testimony play *some humans were harmed in the making of this show that was named to two of Austin’s top ten “Best of” lists and was nominated for 10 B. Iden Payne awards, winning four.

CB GOODMAN is an Austin-based alternative comedy performer, puppeteer, props designer, and teacher. She has performed and studied clown and bouffon for over 10 years with Aitor Basauri, Toby Park, Philippe Gaulier, Sophie Russell, Mick Barnfather, Deanna Fleysher, and Shannan Calcutt. She is the founding director of Grackle Jack Productions and her new solo In The Beginning will premiere in February at Crashbox and then immediately tour to The Frigid New York Fringe Festival . You can also check out her work in the comic duo DAMMIT LOLA at Frontera Fest Jan 27th and at local open mics.
