Masterless Mistress

Since their arrival in New Orleans in 1727, the Sisters of St. Ursula have taught and cared for the inhabitants of that most European of American cities without ceasing. A music manuscript in their library remains the only surviving example of music from Louisiana’s colonial period, and is a rare example of French baroque music from our nation’s past. This intimate, candle-lit evening of music will consist of selections from the Manuscrit des Ursulines de la Nouvelle-Orléans, interspersed with readings from the nuns’ diaries and other colonial-era documents.

Several of the readings in Masterless Mistresses will be drawn from this collection of letters written in 1727 and 1728 by Sister Marie-Madeleine Hachard de St-Stanislas, a young postulant who traveled with 11 fellow Ursuline sisters to the edge of their known world. The letters spanned over a year, from the time she left her parents' home in Rouen, Normandy until around the end of her first year in New Orleans. This is a singular example of an eyewitness account of the Crescent City's earliest years written in the voice of a young woman – we hope you'll join us!
