The Tempest by William Shakespeare -- a gentrification story

The year is 2003 in Austin, Texas and Prospero has a mission: to take revenge on those who kicked him out of his upscale Italian restaurant and banished him to god-forsaken East Austin. He’s set up shop at “La Isla Bonita,” his newly renovated, fair trade, Mexican-inspired coffee shop, and the women who ran it before him–Ariel and Calibán. Together, they will raise the waters from Lady Bird Lake and bring to shore the boat carrying Prospero’s traitors back from a West Lake Hills wedding. That is, if the enemies he’s made don’t get to him first.

About the Directors

Laura Baglereau is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in the Performance as Public Practice program, originally from Columbus, Ohio. She is an artist scholar who investigates gender and issues of in/equality through performance. As a director her work includes Julius Caesar, a devised piece inspired by Shakespeare’s female characters titled The Shakespeare Ladies’ Monologues and an all-female version of Titus Andronicus. She also works as a dramaturg, stage manager, and performer. Baglereau has a M.F.A. in theatre practice: staging Shakespeare from the University of Exeter and a M.A. in performance research from the University of Bristol.

Khristián Méndez Aguirre is a third-year M.F.A. candidate in the Performance as Public Practice program from Guatemala City, Guatemala. In the wake of the #MeToo movement and Time’s Up, Méndez Aguirre’s research historicizes and theorizes healthy rehearsal room practices in traditional director-actor rehearsal rooms. Previous productions in Austin involve the Austin premieres of "telephone" by Ariana Reines and "Mammoth: A De-extinction Love Story" by Adam R. Burnett. Méndez Aguirre has trained and collaborated with award-winning ensembles Double Edge Theater and the Rude Mechanicals and comes to The University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic. This Fall, he will direct a Zero Waste production of "Mr Burns: A Post-Electric Play" by Anne Washburn. Khristianmendez.com
