Maria de Buenos Aires is a surreal spiritual journey set to the beat of Argentine tango. Pulse and poetry play an equal role in which the melody is transformed into a series of mesmerizing moments rich in metaphor. Maria embodies everything that is the Argentinian people. Totally consumed by passion yet fiercely maintaining her independence, Maria fights for survival and freedom, never surrendering. Piazzollas tango music for this story is irresistible, incisive, electrifying, provocative and moving.

Known as the "Fiery Soprano", Colombian-born Catalina Cuervo holds the distinction of having performed the most performances of Piazzolla's "Maria de Buenos Aires."

Ms. Cuervo has performed the role of Maria for numerous prestigious companies including Florida Grand Opera, Cincinnati Opera, and Syracuse Opera to name a few. Following her debut as "Maria" in Chicago, Catalina performed at venues and festivals including "Chicago Dance Festival" and "Latino Music Festival" together with Kaia Quartet and the acclaimed tango show "This is Tango".

Recently, Ms. Cuervo did her debut in Detroit with much success as Frida Kahlo in the opera "Frida" with Michigan Opera Theater. This opera gave her a huge following in the state of Michigan and ended with all sold out shows and triumphant reviews, one even calling "Frida" best Opera of the 2015 season.

As a consequence, Catalina was named one of the 5 most successful Colombian Sopranos in the Opera World by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia.

Other recent roles include Adriana in the Zarzuela "Los Gavilanes," and Hanna in the operetta "The Merry Widow" with La Fundacion Manzur in Bogota, Colombia. Before that Amapola in the Zarzuela "La Leyenda del Beso" and the role of Musetta in "La Boheme" with La Fundación Prolirica in Medellin. "Magda in Puccinis La Rondine and as cover to Alinda in Cavallis Giasone for the Chicago Opera Theater.
