Funding Appeal: Broken Alley Theatre for LARAMIE PROJECT 10 YEARS LATER and MARISOL
Broken Alley Theatre company is preparing for its biggest season ever.
We're a troupe of actors, directors and other artists in Austin, Texas, and we've come a long way since we got our start (thanks to Kickstarter!) in 2013. We've performed in student co-ops and parks; we've done dramas, comedies, one-acts and full-lengths; and we've done it all with nothing but our crowdfunding sponsors and audience donations. We've written our first chapter.
This is our second. This summer, we're putting up two remarkable dramatic works: The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later, by Moisés Kauffman, Stephen Belber and others; and Marisol by José Rivera. Laramie: 10 Years Later is the sequel to the groundbreaking play The Laramie Project, returning to the town a decade after its prequel to examine the lasting emotional impact of Matthew Shepard's murder. MJ Alexander Driscoll (Ms. M.A.D), will be returning to direct the production. MJ directed one of our first productions, The Hands of Its Enemy, and we could not be more thrilled to have her back as a director.
The second play of our season, Marisol, is a magical-realist depiction of New York in the throes of a war between the angels and God. It’s an intense, surreal play, and our own Broken Alley director Jeremy Polk will be at the helm. In addition to being our technical and co-artistic director, Jer has done several short plays with the company.
We’re also using a new space for this summer season: the Ground Floor Theatre on Austin’s East Side. Ground Floor got their start right here on Kickstarter, just like us! They’ve built a great performance space for artists from the ground up, and we are super-excited to be part of Ground Floor’s first year of shows.
As part of our Kickstarter, you can pre-order tickets for the show or shows of your choice. If you want to support Broken Alley but you're not in Austin, don't worry! We've also got some cool posters and merch cooked up, and some zany personal prizes from the cast!
