Make an immediate impact and work in theatre! The Georgetown Palace Theatre, a thriving non-profit theatre company in the booming Central Texas area, is actively searching for a Technical Director/Resident Designer for the busy Education Department.

Why the Palace?

We are looking for those with multi-faceted interests, who are self-motivated, have a passion for theatre and specifically theatre education, and are interested in being a part of the Palace during this exciting time of growth.

This position is responsible for the quality of the technical aspects of all Georgetown Palace Theatre Education Department’s productions and programs, as well as organizing and maintaining equipment and work areas. This position requires the ability to work independently, self-start, and have the awareness to take action in areas that need attention without the need for direction.

Essential Functions:

  • Attend and take notes for all production meetings for each show produced by the Education Department
  • Design and create/build/acquire sets and/or projections for each show produced by the Education Department
  • Design and pull/build/acquire props and furniture/set pieces for each show produced by the Education Department
  • Design and run sound for each show produced by the Education Department
  • Communicate regularly with the Director of Education and the Palace Theatre Technical Director about any needed assistance for shows, relevant deadlines, and progress being made throughout each production process
  • Manage load-in and strike for each show produced by the Education Department
  • Ensure the transition of shows from a rehearsal/classroom space to a performance space and back to a rehearsal/classroom space as needed for the next incoming programming or production
  • Recruit and oversee volunteers for assistance with building and painting sets or other appropriate work
  • Track and accurately report purchases and expenses in a timely fashion, adhering to budgets assigned by the Director of Education
  • Maintain the organization and inventory of set pieces, props, tools, and equipment stored onsite in the Education Department building
  • Troubleshoot Lighting, Audio, and Projection Systems if/when needed
  • Report safety concerns and areas that need repair or maintenance within the space to the Director of Education as well as the Palace Theatre Technical Director and/or Facilities Coordinator
  • Work with the rest of the Palace Staff on projects as assigned

Basic Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Proficiency with computer programs including Google Suite
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to self-start and work independently
  • Ability to troubleshoot
  • Proficiency with Qlab
  • Proficiency with light board and sound equipment
  • Proficiency with both hand and power tools
  • Ability to work on ladders and heights
  • Ability to lift at least 20-30 lbs

This is a full-time, salaried exempt position.

Work Days:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Nights and Weekends as needed

Each year, in addition to running a variety of classes during the school year, The Georgetown Palace Theatre Education Department produces:

  • 2 semester-long KIDS shows (2nd-5th grade performers, approx 30 min run time)
  • one fall (typically performs in December), one spring (typically performs in May)
  • 2 semester-long JUNIOR shows (5th-8th grade performers, approx 60 min run time)
  • one fall (typically performs in December), one spring (typically performs in May)
  • 1 full-length musical (8th-12th grade performers), typically performs in late December
  • 1 full-length play (8th-12th grade performers), typically performs in April/May
  • 1 Musical Theatre Showcase (8th-12th grade performers), typically performs in May
  • 2 Theatre for Young Audience shows
  • One fall (typically performs in October), one spring (typically performs in April)
  • performed by adults for kids/school field trips (typical run time is 50-60 minutes)
  • rehearses for 2 weeks during daytime hours, performs for 3 weeks during weekday daytime hours plus a couple of Saturday public performances
  • 16-18 fully-produced Spring Break and Summer Camp shows
  • Spring Break shows are rehearsed and produced in one week
  • Summer Camp shows run in FIVE 2-week sessions, with 3 different productions in each session
  • depending on the age group, each show is 30 minutes, 45-50 minutes, or 60 minutes in run time

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $37,440.00 - $40,705.00 per year
