19th Annual Black and Latino Playwrights Conference, Tribute. to José Rivera, Texas State University, August 29 - September 5, 2021

TEXAS STATE’S DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE HOSTS 19th ANNUAL BLACK AND LATINO PLAYWRIGHTS CELEBRATION 

José Rivera (via Texas State University)SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State University’s department of theatre and dance is hosting the 19th  annual Black and Latino Playwrights Celebration (BLPC) Aug. 29- Sept. 5.  

The mission of the Black and Latino Playwrights Celebration is to celebrate the voices of Black and Latino playwrights by developing new plays in collaboration with professional directors, actors, and university students.  

After a nationwide call for scripts, two plays have been selected for further development and staged readings. The celebration will feature a tribute to our 2021 distinguished guest, José Rivera.  

José Rivera is an esteemed playwright and screen writer, who has been awarded numerous accolades and nominations—including an Academy Award nomination for the 2005 Best Adapted Screenplay, making him the first Puerto Rican writer ever nominated. 

The tribute to Rivera will take place on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. The event is open to the public and free for all who attend.  

This year, BLPC will host a playwrighting workshop with Virginia Grise.  The workshop will be on Sept. 4 from noon-3 p.m. The event is $15 for the public and $10 for students, prospective attendees can register by visiting txstatepresents.com.  

The New Play Development Reading Presentation of Power to the Queendom by ShaWanna Renne Rivon will take place on Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Harrison Theatre with a talkback following the reading. Tickets are $10 for the public and $7 for students.

Parking:            Special Event Parking for all fine arts events occurring is now only available in the Edward Gary Street Garage, 405 N. Edward Gary Street. The garage is located on the corner of University Drive and Edward Gary Street for a flat fee of $5 per event. Please Note: The garage attendant will only be accepting cash. Credit/debit card transactions will not be accepted for special event parking.
