Appeal to Creatives: unrestricKID, An Art Fair in Austin on March 16, 2018 to Emphasize Arts in Elementary Education

(an appeal from organizer Brie Jones)

Right now, Texas state legislators are playing dangerous games with budgeting for our public schools; what is at stake are vital programs for creativity, self-expression, and movement. If things continue the way they are, we are facing an emotional crisis in generations to come—people without access to what really moves and inspires them, bereft of a sense of community and value in their creations. I see a different future available, with possibilities and opportunities galore, leaving kids with the feeling that what they contribute is beautiful, valuable, and important. I see them developing into adults who want to nurture their communities, and I see adults remembering what it feels like to really share themselves with other people, free of judgment.

unrestricKID is a one-day creator’s faire, scheduled for Saturday, March 16th, 2019, where local artists, artisans, and entrepreneurs come together to guide elementary-aged children into discovering their passions. Each artist or artist grouping would have the opportunity to curate their own creative experience for these students, with creative control over what is presented and how, if it is age-appropriate for elementary school kids.

I would love to create this with you, for you. This is an opportunity to help nurture the next generation of artists and lead them to discover how incredible what they create can be. You have the power to inspire people and I am so blessed beyond measure to be able to provide space for you to make an impact in the lives of these kids. I am committed that all participants, students, parents, and contributors walk away from the day feeling inspired and as though they have helped create something beautiful for the world. I am moved by how great the impact can be from the smallest actions and considerations—you never really know how great your contribution can be.

What I need from you is the following:

a.      Who you are, what you are up to in the world, and how I can best contact you.

You can opt for phone, email, or text—whatever works best for you! Please let me know of some general times that I can best reach you—I want you to be comfortable with how and when you are contacted!

b.     A breakdown of what you would like to teach and how many students you could comfortably lead at one time.

Parents will be present, but unlikely to participate unless you have ideas about how to incorporate parents into the fun!

c.      Any supplies or accommodation that you would need in order to make this possible for you.

No request is too small or too big. Dare to be bold, audacious, and even unreasonable. We will do our best to make this work for everybody. Include your own personal well-being as a consideration for your needs!

If you are interested, please reach out to me NOW! If not, I request your feedback so that I may further hone my skills as a community organizer and will graciously accept your contribution of what has you choosing whether you can participate or not! Let’s start planning and preparing; the earlier, the better!

Joyfully & lovingly yours,

Brie Jones
