When her father dies unexpectedly, Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father's hidden desires.

“I leaned in closer during our conversation and asked, “But when she walks in the door and Alison sees her for the first time, what do you think she is feeling?” Taylor was working on her fourth or fifth Ring of Keys rehearsal.

She paused, thoughtfully - as this eleven-year-old is wont to do - “I think Alison thought she was the only unicorn. Then, she sees her and knows she’s not alone.”

And then, my heart swelled three sizes.

Watching this story unfold with this cast and team has been one of the most creatively rewarding experiences of my life. The care that has been taken to craft Alison’s story is real, y’all. From the perfect illustrations and the breathtaking light design to the beautiful orchestrations and carefully crafted sound and prop design, we agreed as a production team that the story of Alison’s “most intimate history” (to steal from Alison Bechdel herself), was the most important component, and to treat this is as merely another musical would do a disservice to the story itself.

There is something so life-giving about feeling seen, and this show provides such a beautiful opportunity to be seen as a queer woman, a father, a mother, a person on a journey of self-discovery…”
