Beautiful, the Carole King musical
by Aurora Arts Theatre

Nov. 13 - Nov. 14

Before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, a spunky teenager from Brooklyn with a passion for writing songs. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she was twenty, had a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts of the day alongside her husband Gerry Goffin. Their friendly rivalry with fellow songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil pushed all four to the top of the charts. It wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her own voice, and wrote one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Aurora Arts Theatre is excited to announce its 2027 season opener with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, a Tony- and Grammy-Award-winning jukebox musical, directed by Laurie G. Hoefelmeyer.

The musical tells Carole King’s true story from Brooklyn songwriter to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legend. It’s filled with over two dozen hits like “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Natural Woman,” and “I Feel the Earth Move,” and audiences keep calling it a must-see ride through 1960s pop music.

Carole King
FEMALE · 16–35

An aspiring teenaged pop songwriter who becomes the quintessential singer/songwriter and undisputed pop star in her own right. Appealing, funny and vulnerable, a girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn who against all odds makes a splash as a musical prodigy at 16. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music who became the voice of a generation of young women.

Known for: “Natural Woman,” “It’s Too Late”
Gerry Goffin
MALE · 18–39

Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. Exceptionally charming and innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more. Gerry has many powerful scenes that give insight into the mental illness that plagued him his whole life.

Known for: “Up on the Roof,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday”
Cynthia Weil
FEMALE · 20–39

A new lyricist who quickly becomes Carole’s best friend and eventually Barry’s romantic interest. Sophisticated, smart and chic with a quick wit, as contemporary as Carole is old-fashioned. Self-confident and sarcastic, and extremely likeable.

Barry Mann
MALE · 20–40

A fellow composer at 1650 Broadway who becomes good friends with Gerry and Carole and romantically involved with his lyricist Cynthia Weil. Good natured, appealing, competitive, ambitious and very neurotic, but genuinely likeable.

There is a great deal of footage of the real man online, and his vocal inflections and syntax are unmistakable.

Known for: “You’ve Got a Friend”

Carole’s Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, broken down by life and her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes, she is a strong guiding force and a reliable shoulder.
