Romeo Chang
by Overtime Theater

Apr. 11 - Apr. 12

An emotionally powerful, beautifully poetic dark comedy with a hint of fantasy. A piece about parents and children, life and death, and the sacrifices made for others; even those who we haven't met yet.
Jen discovers she is dying from Stage 4 cancer mid-pregnancy and seeks out help from a qi-gong master by the name of Romeo Chang to keep her alive long enough to have her baby. Romeo's quirkiness poorly hides a world-wearied sense of pessimism that causes a strain on Jen's hopes for success. Her distraught husband and stubborn father make matters more difficult with their inability to cooperate with each other as well as to come to terms with Jen's inevitable fate.

For all characters: seeking actors with a strong emotional and dynamic range. This is an intimate space, so we are looking for a strong connection to the material, characters, and to the other actors, without going overboard or creating caricatures. The magical realism within the piece should not deceive you; these characters are grounded and gritty and deal with dire consequences and serious conflicts in honest ways.

The roles of Jen, Sam, and Romeo are cast. Casting only the role of Tom as well as understudies for all roles.

Jen: Female, late 20's - early 40's; Her strong will and mission to save her unborn child distracts her from her fate. But make no mistake, she has not come to terms with her own reality yet. (pre-cast)

Sam: Male, late 40's - early 60's, Jen's father. His hard-headedness has become a defense against showing Jen his pain and sorrow. His dedication to his white-collar work has become misguided over the years. Double cast as Cancer Tech (pre-cast)

Tom: Male, late 20's - early 40's, Jen's husband. Doing his best to hold it together, but failing miserably. Already feeling lost and alone. Double cast as Fetus Tech.

Romeo: Male, late 20's - early 50's, a qi-gong master. He seems aloof and odd, but has awareness beyond first glance. His past experiences have hardened his heart, opened the door to his alcoholism, and robbed him of his drive to help others. (pre-cast)
