A Rock Sails By
by Playhouse 2000
Jan. 19
Astrophysicist Dr. Lynn Cummings has always believed in science over faith in the unknown. But now that her life is changing, the certainty that was once a source of comfort has become a source of emptiness. When an unidentified flying object is sighted heading toward Earth, she grants an interview to a journalist who mis-quotes her. With her credibility on the line, she invites him with her to witness the object as it comes closest to the earth. Dr Cummings hopes it will pass without incident, but there is no telling what she will discover beyond the stars. [inspired by the space object “Oumuamua” which really did pass by Earth in 2017.]

Auditions for A Rock Sails By by Sean Grennan – January 19 at 2:30 pm in the Werlein Annex Studio
To be entered in the TexFest One-Act-Play competition, part of the AACT’s bi-annual festival.
A Rock Sails By is an exploration of science’s interactions with – and intersections with – faith in the unknowable. It has a semi-Sci-Fi vibe, and a subtle but important message. Includes issues of mother-daughter relationships, Alzheimer’s disease, loss of a loved-one, and – of course – fact vs. faith.
All auditions are held in the Werlein Annex Studio unless otherwise indicated.
Advance copies of scripts can be checked out for two days (seriously, two!) at P2K’s VK Garage Theater office, 305 Washington Street
Available Roles:
Dr. Lynn Cummings – (Female, 50’s-60’s) very intelligent, somewhat sardonic – a firm believer in facts.
Olive Cummings (Lynn’s Daughter) – (Female, 20’s-30’s) smart, self-possessed and caring. A positive and attractive person who believes there is more than we can see.
Jason Harper – (Male, 30’s) a bit of a “floating through life” type, a journalist currently employed by an on-line click bait site, but embarrassed by it. Not sure what he thinks about the big questions.
The Messenger – (Male or Female or non-binary, any age.) A talent for physical comedy will be a plus, as will a bit of a wacky attitude.
Tom (male – voice only) will be pre-recorded.
The following roles will probably be double-cast, and can be played by any gender.
Haley (probably 20’s?) a teaching assistant to Dr. Cummings
Chancellor (probably 50s+?) the head of the university where Dr. Cummings teaches
Taylor (probably 20’s – 30’s, but could be almost any age) Editor(?) of Grate, the eZine where Jason works.
Doctor (any age) a specialist in memory care
