The Winter's Tale
by Twelve Satyrs Shakespeare

Nov. 01 - Nov. 03

The Winter’s Tale” is one of Shakespeare’s finest works, but it is (as we see it) underperformed. We are extremely excited to bring a production to the Austin area. We are Shakespeare enthusiasts who care deeply about his drama and language. This will be an amateur production with high-expectations.

The cast size will be determined by auditions. Many of the characters can be cut, merged, or doubled. However, we would prefer to minimize any textual loss to the play. Due to the nature of the play, actors will likely be asked to perform multiple roles. All roles are open to consideration. You may also request a role.

This will be the first production done by Twelve Satyr Shakespeare. We are inspired by the challenge amateur theater presents, and the extra-challenge of bringing Shakespeare to a modern audience.

We encourage anyone and everyone to apply. No experience with Shakespeare or acting is required. We do, however, believe that there should be a level of seriousness and respect that coincides with the experiment, play, and fun of acting.

The Audition Process

If you are interested in auditioning, please send an acting resume and headshot (if you have one) to TwelveSatyrShakespeare@gmail.com. Also, please email us if you have any questions. We will respond to your email with the time and location for your audition.

For the audition, we ask that you prepare any Shakespearian work to perform. This could be a monologue, sonnet, or any other Shakespeare text. It can be as short or long as you like. The goal of the audition is to see who you are and what you are capable of as an actor. The audition could last five minutes or thirty. Having auditioned for roles ourselves, we have come to believe that the process of auditioning can often disrupt the abilities of the actor. The intention will be to work with and around this “disruption.” You may be asked to perform your prepared work in an improv style or with one-of-us involved. You may also be asked to do readings from “The Winter’s Tale” or other works. Again, the goal is to see you at your best. Because we believe in the collaborative process of theater, you may also make suggestions during your audition as to how it should go.

Callbacks:

If there is a need for callbacks, they will be done promptly following the original auditions. Additionally, actors who are invited for callbacks will be compensated $20 for the further disruption.

Rehearsals:

Rehearsals will be a two-part process. Once casting is done, we will spend a day meeting each other and doing a complete readthrough. Then, you will have roughly a month off to learn lines and work scenes individually. During this month, actors will be encouraged to meet with each other and the directors on a casual basis to work through things. The second half is proper rehearsals with the entire cast as we do run throughs of the play. Here, actors are further encouraged to casually meet with their scene partners to discuss aspects of the play.

Compensation:

All members of the production will split any-and-all profits of the performances equally.
